I recently decided to upgrade my three year old 5400RPM laptop hard drive to an OCZ Vertex2 Solid State Drive. I also upgrade the RAM to 4Gb instead of the 2Gb originally installed.

The Vertex2 is one of the higher end SSD’s that OCZ makes with read/write speeds in the mid-200Mb/sec. I purchased the 60Gb version which was around $120, and is probably less at this point.

This drive has TRIM support which you want for an SSD to prevent additional writes to the drive. This will extend the life of the drive.

The speed of the drive was nothing short of amazing. The boot up/shutdown times decreased by probably 300%. The biggest speed increase that I’ve noticed is when I enter my password to log in, and I usually had to wait around 10 seconds for all the different services to load, now, I can log in and right away open Firefox with no wait time.

It is definably a huge upgrade, and even if I didn’t upgrade my RAM, I think I would have experienced the same speed increase. For anyone that has an older laptop (~3 years) and doesn’t/can’t upgrade to a newer laptop, an SSD is definitely the way to go. This won’t help much with number crunching applications because that is dependent on the processor, but it will help with the overall speed of your machine. Make sure your machine uses SATA.

Once you’re ready to upgrade to a newer laptop, you can always continue using your SSD in the new machine (which I would recommend) and continue enjoying some sweet load times.

So I’m patiently waiting to get a few more parts for my motorcycle. The enrichener (electric choke), and two fuel jets. The enrichener broke and that’s why I was having issues starting the bike. Hopefully once I replace that she will start right up (at least after two or three tries). The two fuel jets are going to be bigger and allow more fuel to go to the carburetor and engine.

The list below is all the modifications that I’ve done to my bike:
Sportsbike handlebars
Synthetic motor oil
Re-jetted the carburetor to 45/175 (45 slow/175 main)
Crankcase breather filter modification
Shimmed the carburetor needle to allow more fuel
Vance & Hines exhaust
New Pirelli front and back tires
K&N air filter
NKG Iridium spark plug

I believe that is all the modifications that I’ve done. This should all add up to about and additional 3-5HP to the bike.

Let’s just say that I had to have it. When creating websites, or visiting websites, I always notice the “page shift” that occurs when you switch from a page that doesn’t use the scroll bar to one that does use the scroll bar. Testing the website in Internet Explorer worked fine and turned out to be what I was aiming for. With Firefox on the other hand, that wasn’t the case, and anyone that has been using Firefox for a while will not go back to IE7 anytime soon. I basically wanted to make sure that a website that I create turns out the same in IE7 and Firefox 2.0+.

I did some research on the internet and found a way of actually manually forcing the vertical scroll bar to show up in Firefox even though there wasn’t a use for it.

Always Visible Scrollbar

As used in Internet Explorer.

Right-click on this file.

Select <samp>Save Link As…</samp>

You should usually should save it in
C:Documents and Settings<var>[Windows Login Name]</var>Application DataMozillaFirefoxProfiles<var>[profile name]</var>chrome
, on these conditions:

You are using an English version of Windows 2000 or Windows XP.

The drive labeled
C:
is the one which has Windows installed on it.

<dfn>
[Windows Login Name]
</dfn> is the name you select at the “welcome” screen when starting Windows. (If you don’t have a “welcome” screen, this should be
All Users
.)

<dfn>
[profile name]
</dfn> is a random string of 8 letters, a dot (
.
) and then some more letters.

For example, I would save it to
C:Documents and Settings<var>Ben</var>Application DataMozillaFirefoxProfiles<var>lo3h7uay.default</var>chrome
.

Click the <samp>Save</samp> button.

Exit Firefox and then start it again.

You will now have a robust vertical scrollbar always visible.

Credit goes to http://projectcerbera.com/web/articles/firefox-scrollbar for this tutorial and simplicity of implementing it.

For anyone reading this, especially the coders for Firefox, this should be a standard feature in the next release of Firefox.
